What conversion rate measures
Conversion rate is conversions ÷ clicks × 100. For an affiliate, a conversion is a sale from your click, so it's sales divided by affiliate clicks — the step from clicking your link to actually buying. Crucially, that step happens on the merchant's side of the fence, which makes it the hardest part of the funnel to influence directly and the most important to measure.
Conversion rate is the bridge to EPC
On its own, a conversion rate is just a percentage. Multiply it by your average commission per sale and it becomes money: EPC = conversion rate × commission per sale. A 4% conversion rate on an $8 commission is a $0.32 EPC. That's why lifting conversion rate raises earnings even when nothing else changes — you extract more from the same clicks.
The full funnel, in three numbers
Conversion rate is the middle link in a chain: CTR × conversion rate × commission per sale is the whole path from a visitor to a commission, and it equals your revenue per visitor. The CTR calculator handles the first step (view → click), this one handles the second (click → sale), and the EPC calculator ties value to the click. Improve any link and the whole chain earns more — and the biggest conversion-rate lever is usually matching buyer intent to the offer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate conversion rate?
Conversion rate = conversions ÷ clicks × 100. For an affiliate, a conversion is a sale from your affiliate click, so CR = sales ÷ affiliate clicks. If 24 of 600 clicks turned into sales, that's 24 ÷ 600 = 4%. It measures the step from click to purchase — the part that happens on the merchant's side.
What's a good affiliate conversion rate?
It varies enormously by niche, price point, and buyer intent — high-intent review and comparison traffic converts far better than casual clicks. Rather than a universal benchmark, compare your own pages and offers against each other and watch the trend. What matters most is that CR feeds directly into EPC: EPC = CR × commission per sale.
How does conversion rate relate to EPC?
Directly. EPC (earnings per click) equals your conversion rate times your average commission per sale. So a 4% conversion rate on a $8 commission is an EPC of $0.32. That's why improving conversion rate lifts earnings even when traffic and commission stay flat — you're earning more from the same clicks.
What's the difference between conversion rate and CTR?
They're consecutive steps in the funnel. CTR is view → click (did the visitor click your affiliate link?). Conversion rate is click → sale (did that click become a purchase?). Multiply the whole chain — CTR × conversion rate × commission per sale — and you get revenue per visitor. CTR is on your side of the fence; conversion rate happens on the merchant's.
